Apache’s vision is to be the premier exploration and production company with global assets focused on North American growth. To support this vision, the company’s multidisciplinary Corporate Reservoir Management (RM) team performs reservoir characterization, reservoir simulation, and integrated field studies to support investment decisions and underpin reserves estimates across Apache’s Regional business units. As a member of the RM team, the successful candidate will provide best-in-class geoscience support, consisting primarily of integrated field studies and static model construction for reservoir simulation studies.

 

The Geoscience Advisor will work with fellow RM and Region staff (petrophysicists, geologists, geophysicists, and engineers) to identify, prioritize, and execute technical projects, as well as review work performed directly by/within the Regions. The candidate will also work with CRE (Corporate Reservoir Engineering) as required to validate in-place volumetric estimates and associated reserves bookings.  The candidate will be expected to manage a mix of longer-term projects and short-term operational requests, re-prioritizing according to business need.  The candidate will also mentor younger staff within RM, other corporate groups, and in the Regions, building skills and deploying best practices company-wide. To facilitate both project delivery and skills transfer, the candidate will travel both domestically and internationally as required. Specific technical skills/expertise required for the role include sequence stratigraphic analysis, structural analysis, geophysical mapping, petrophysical analysis, 3D reservoir modeling, field development planning, and uncertainty and risk management. Experience in both conventional and unconventional reservoir characterization/ geomodeling is required.

 

The Geoscience Advisor will be responsible for:

  • Performing integrated field studies and static reservoir modelling, working closely with Region staff and other RM team members to assure quality input and interpretation;
  • Performing 3D geocellular modeling using Petrel, with a primary focus on the construction of structural/stratigraphic frameworks and property arrays to underpin static volumetric estimates and/or support iterative reservoir simulation studies (history matching, uncertainty, and optimization);
  • Integrating multiple scales of data including regional depositional concepts, seismic data and attributes, well logs and core data;
  • Developing and maintaining solid working relationships with region G&G/RE staff to engender trust and confidence, insure frequent and effective communications, and drive better business results;
  • Handling multiple projects/studies simultaneously, reprioritizing as required;
  • Quickly and clearly providing solutions and feedback to requesting groups;
  • Regularly presenting studies and recommendations to engineering/geophysical groups, as well as senior management;
  • Mentoring and supporting geologists involved in reservoir characterization and reservoir modeling studies.

Job Qualifications

 

  • MSc. Geology degree is required;
  • Minimum of 10 years (preferably 15-20) of industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years in advanced 3D geological modeling, incorporating seismic, petrophysical, and geologic concepts
  • Operating company experience (both onshore/offshore) preferred;
  • Highly proficient in Petrel software;
  • Experience in integrating core, well log, geophysical, petrophysical, production, and engineering data into a coherent framework;
  • Experience in core analysis and description, lithofacies analysis, and rock typing;
  • Understanding of geostatistics and fundamental geostatistical algorithms as well as data and interpretation uncertainties and their influence on modeling and business decisions;
  • Experience in probabilistic and multi-scenario reserves estimation;
  • Carbonate, clastic and unconventional reservoir description experience;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Ability to evaluate, apply, and adapt to new/evolving software packages and workflows;
  • Ability to travel as required, including to international locations (Egypt, UK);
  • Ability to provide technically-driven analysis, opinions, and recommendations without business/operational bias;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Fluency in English required; spoken and written.
